PurpleTools Clicks — Instructions

PurpleTools Clicks is designed to reduce repetitive clicking, screen clutter, and unnecessary choices while working in eClinicalWorks. Each tool can be turned on or off individually, so you can use only the features that fit your workflow.

Getting Started

After installing PurpleTools Clicks, click the Chrome puzzle-piece icon in the upper-right corner of Chrome and pin PurpleTools Clicks so it is easy to find.

Click the PurpleTools Clicks icon to open the Options page.

On first use, you may be asked to review the Data-Use Disclosure and Consent and confirm your PurpleTools Clicks access. New users may begin the available 30-day free trial or log in if they already have access.

After changing any PurpleTools Clicks setting, click Save & Close, then refresh eClinicalWorks.

Changes normally take effect on the next eClinicalWorks page load or refresh.

Windows: Ctrl + R or F5Mac: Command + R

Workflow Modules

Jellybean Banner

The Jellybean Banner simplifies the eClinicalWorks Jellybean area and places the shortcuts you use most often in a more visible, predictable location.

Available shortcuts can include: Pre-Registration, Transcription, E-Prescription, Schedule, Documents, Referrals, Telephone Encounters, Labs, Messages, Resource Schedule, Refresh, and QuickFilter. Use the Options page to choose which shortcuts you want displayed.

QuickFilter

Eliminates the need to press filter when reviewing schedules.

Office Visit Banner

The Office Visit Banner provides large, easy-to-see navigation buttons for the major sections of an eClinicalWorks office visit.

Available buttons include: Encounters, Chief Complaint, HPI, Medical Summary, CDSS, Past Medical History, Medication, Allergies, Review of Systems, Physical Exam, Assessment, Treatment, Billing, Patient Documents, Procedures, Growth Chart, Immunizations, Flowsheets, Notes, Labs, and Diagnostic Imaging. Choose the buttons you want in the PurpleTools Clicks Options page. The goal is to reduce searching through the standard eClinicalWorks interface and make movement through the note faster.

Office Note Banner

The Office Note Banner reduces clutter while working inside the office note and provides easier navigation through commonly used note sections.

Enable it from the Options page if you prefer a cleaner note workspace.

SmartTrash

SmartTrash makes repetitive delete actions faster while preserving access to normal eClinicalWorks confirmation behavior.

Normal click: performs the ordinary trash action. Click and hold: continue holding until the PurpleTools trash indicator begins blinking to bypass repetitive confirmation steps on supported items. Cancel: continue holding until the blinking stops if you decide not to complete the delete action. SmartTrash only acts where PurpleTools recognizes a supported eClinicalWorks delete control.

Allergy Error

Provides a quick button to allergies when eClinical stops workflow to force allergy input.

PurpleTools provides a direct route back to the Allergy section so you can update the information without manually navigating through the note.

Telephone Message Director

Telephone Message Director is designed for offices that repeatedly send telephone messages to the same staff members.

Enter up to six names in the Options page. PurpleTools automatically prepares the appropriate initials and search information and provides quick buttons for those people when working with supported telephone-message screens. This can reduce the repeated searching and clicking normally required to route messages.

Lab Report Director

Lab Report Director adds large PurpleTools shortcut buttons to the eClinicalWorks lab-result screen so you can move directly to commonly used actions without searching through the standard interface.

The buttons shown on the lab-result screen include: New Tel Enc — Opens a new Telephone Encounter. Use this when a laboratory result requires a telephone message, patient notification, or other follow-up that should be documented as a Telephone Encounter. Letter — Opens the eClinicalWorks letter function so you can create a letter related to the laboratory result. Sign Labs — Takes you directly to the laboratory-signing workflow so you can review and sign laboratory results. Encounters — Opens the patient's Encounters area directly from the lab-result screen. Labs — Opens the patient's laboratory section so you can review additional laboratory information without manually navigating away from the current workflow. Cumulative Lab Report — Opens the eClinicalWorks cumulative laboratory report so previous and current laboratory values can be reviewed together. Lab Report Director is primarily a navigation tool. It places frequently used eClinicalWorks functions directly on the lab-result page so that common follow-up actions can be reached with fewer clicks. The underlying laboratory information and eClinicalWorks functions are unchanged. Review the appropriate result and patient information before signing, documenting, or sending information.

Push Lab Results

Push Lab Results allows selected laboratory information to be entered into the current note without manually moving back and forth through multiple lab screens.

Available time ranges include: 6 Months, 1 Year, 2 Years. Select the desired period and use PurpleTools to pull supported cumulative laboratory information into the note. Always review the information placed into the note before completing or signing the encounter.

Yellow Note Alert

Yellow Note Alert makes the eClinicalWorks Sticky Note more difficult to overlook.

When text is present in the supported Sticky Note area, PurpleTools can blink the Sticky Note and play an alert sound. Alert volume can be adjusted in the Options page. Disable the module if you do not want an audible or visual Sticky Note alert.

Template Helper

Template Helper is designed to make the eClinicalWorks Templates area easier and safer to use.

It enlarges selected controls, improves visibility, and covers the Paste Over choice to reduce accidental template actions. It also makes template merge controls easier to target, particularly when many templates or choices are displayed. PurpleTools does not change the clinical content of the template. It changes how supported controls are presented and accessed.

Favorites

Favorites automatically activates supported eClinicalWorks Favorite stars after the corresponding view finishes loading.

This includes supported Favorite controls in areas such as Assessment and Quick Order. The Favorite action occurs once when the matching view loads. You remain in control: after PurpleTools selects a Favorite star, you can manually turn that star off if you do not want it selected.

Documents Description Expander

Documents Description Expander makes long document descriptions easier to read.

When supported document descriptions are abbreviated or difficult to see: hover over the description to magnify it, use the expanded area to read more of the description, and click the document while hovering to open it. This is particularly useful when several scanned, faxed, or imported documents have similar abbreviated names.

Review Documents

The Review Documents module adds faster document-signing controls to supported eClinicalWorks Review Documents pages.

Controls can include: Sign Unchecked, Sign Checked, Sign All. You can also configure supported document and timing preferences from the Options page. When an automated signing process is active, the red Stop button stops the process immediately. Review the documents and selections before using bulk-signing functions.

AutoLock Note

AutoLock Note provides a faster way to perform the supported eClinicalWorks note-lock action.

It is intended to eliminate repetitive navigation when the note is ready to be locked. The clinical note should always be reviewed before locking it.

Med Dx Match — Rx→Dx

Med Dx Match helps organize medications from the patient's Current Rx list under the appropriate diagnoses in the Assessment. When you click Match Meds, PurpleTools reviews the medications and the diagnoses that are currently available in the Assessment and attempts to match supported medications with an appropriate diagnosis.

Before anything is entered into the note, PurpleTools gives you control over what happens to each medication. You therefore do not have to accept every suggested medication match. If PurpleTools cannot find an appropriate diagnosis for a medication, the medication can still be handled in the same way. You can leave the medication selected and choose the appropriate action so it is added to the note, or uncheck the box if you do not want that medication added. An unmatched medication does not have to be forced under an inappropriate diagnosis. The purpose of Med Dx Match is to reduce the repetitive work of moving medications into the appropriate parts of the Assessment while keeping the final decision with the user.

  • Continue — Adds the medication to the note as a continued medication under the matched diagnosis.
  • Refill — Adds the medication to the note and selects the refill action.
  • Discontinue — Adds the medication to the note and selects the discontinue action.
  • Do Nothing — Uncheck the medication's box. PurpleTools will ignore that medication and will not add it to the note.

Always review the medication, the matched diagnosis, Continue/Refill/Discontinue status, any unmatched medications, and any medications you have unchecked before completing the note.

Enabling and Disabling Modules

Every major PurpleTools Clicks feature can be controlled from the Options page.

  1. Click the PurpleTools Clicks icon in Chrome.
  2. Find the module you want.
  3. Check or uncheck Enable this module.
  4. Adjust any module-specific choices.
  5. Click Save & Close.
  6. Refresh eClinicalWorks.

You do not need to use every module. Many users may prefer to enable only the tools that correspond to their personal workflow.

If a PurpleTools Feature Does Not Appear

First try refreshing the eClinicalWorks page.

Windows: Ctrl + R or F5Mac: Command + R

If the feature still does not appear:

  1. Confirm that the module is enabled in PurpleTools Clicks Options.
  2. Confirm that PurpleTools Clicks is enabled in Chrome.
  3. Confirm that your PurpleTools access or trial is active.
  4. Make sure you are on the appropriate eClinicalWorks page for that module.
  5. Close and reopen the affected eClinicalWorks screen if necessary.
  6. If eClinicalWorks has recently changed the layout of that particular screen, report the page and feature that is no longer working.

Because eClinicalWorks contains many different screens and periodically changes its interface, a PurpleTools feature may only appear when the corresponding eClinicalWorks element is present.

Privacy and Data Use

PurpleTools Clicks operates inside the browser on supported eClinicalWorks pages.

PurpleTools Clicks is designed so that patient information, provider information, medication information, diagnosis information, and the clinical content being viewed in eClinicalWorks are not transmitted by PurpleTools over the internet.

The extension reads supported information from the eClinicalWorks page locally in the browser so that it can perform its workflow functions. PurpleTools Clicks does not function as an electronic medical record and does not replace eClinicalWorks. It provides browser-based workflow tools layered over supported eClinicalWorks pages.

Subscription and licensing functions may communicate with the service used to confirm PurpleTools access. Clinical information from the eClinicalWorks page is not required for that licensing process.

See the PurpleTools Clicks Privacy Policy for the complete privacy and data-use disclosure.

Important

PurpleTools Clicks is intended to reduce repetitive computer work. It does not make clinical decisions for the user.

Always review diagnoses, medication actions, laboratory information, documents, orders, billing information, and any material added to or changed in the medical record before signing, locking, transmitting, or completing the encounter.

eClinicalWorks remains the underlying medical-record system, and the user remains responsible for verifying the final medical record.
